The primary threat to polar bears Arctic-wide is climate change, but in May 2008, Polar Bears were listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act due to ongoing and potential loss of sea ice habitat.
On ice-covered waters, polar bears live in the Arctic. The sea ice provides Polar Bears with access to seals, their primary food source, as well as a place to rest and breed.
The global Polar Bear population is estimated to be between 22,000 and 31,000 individuals.
